Summary

Skyhour redefined flight booking by introducing a flexible, airline-agnostic flight hour gifting system, allowing users to purchase and redeem flight hours across multiple airlines instead of buying traditional tickets. Built on AWS (Lambda, EC2, RDS, S3) with Sabre GDS integration, the platform enabled real-time flight pricing, seat availability, and seamless ticketing. A digital flight hour wallet provided maximum booking flexibility, while a mobile-first approach (native iOS/Android) simplified one-click flight redemptions. Powered by Node.js (Express), PostgreSQL, and Stripe API for secure payments, Skyhour achieved $15M in venture funding, processed 50,000+ flight hours in its first year, and increased conversion rates by 45% through ML-driven smart recommendations, cementing its position as a pioneer in the travel-tech industry.

Challenges

  • Revolutionizing the Airline Industry with Flight Hour Gifting
  • Skyhour aimed to disrupt the traditional airline ticketing model by allowing users to gift flight hours instead of specific tickets. This required:
  • Seamless Integration with Airline Systems – The platform had to pull real-time flight pricing, availability, and seat allocation from Sabre GDS, ensuring accurate bookings.
  • Intuitive Flight Hour Redemption System – Unlike standard airline purchases, Skyhour users accumulated flight hours, which could be used flexibly across multiple airlines.
  • Frictionless User Experience – Booking flights had to be as simple as purchasing a gift card, with minimal user input required for redemption.
  • Global Scalability & Compliance – The platform needed to support multi-currency payments, comply with aviation industry regulations, and handle cross-border taxation complexities.

Solution

  • Modular, Cloud-Based Booking System Developed a real-time flight pricing & availability engine powered by Sabre GDS, ensuring accurate seat inventory and pricing updates.
  • Flight Hour Wallet System Designed a digital wallet where users could accumulate Skyhours and redeem them across multiple airlines and routes, offering maximum flexibility.
  • AWS-Powered Scalable Architecture Deployed on AWS (Lambda, EC2, S3, and RDS), enabling global reach, auto-scaling, and seamless booking flow without performance bottlenecks.
  • User-Centric Design & Growth Strategy Built a mobile-first experience, simplifying the checkout process, integrating one-click flight booking, and introducing a referral-based rewards system to encourage viral adoption.
  • Fraud Prevention & Payment Security Implemented PCI-DSS-compliant Stripe API for payments and fraud detection algorithms to prevent unauthorized transactions.

Impact

  • Raised $15M in venture funding in New York, with investors like JetBlue, establishing Skyhour as a leading travel-tech innovator.
  • Over 50,000 flight hours booked in the first operational year, proving market demand and user engagement.
  • Embedded smart recommendations increased conversion rates by 45%, leveraging user behavior analysis.
  • Developed a scalable, API-first system enabling real-time booking updates across GDS-available airlines.
  • Became a pioneer of flexible airline booking models, influencing the future of flight gifting in travel tech.
